Red is the League Champion, admired by trainers all over the world. He is the one everyone challenges to try and beat and yet seems to be undefeatable.
Red is understandably confident in himself and knows that with his faithful Raticate by his side, he can overcome all obstacles. He never doubts his ability to make it through any kind of bad situation, and has faith that he'll survive anything that life can throw at him.
When Red first began his journey, the first Pokémon he caught was a Rattata. Discarding his Squirtle for it, he began raising Ratty. Ratty at first never wanted to listen to Red and refused to be in a Pokéball. Red was so fond of Ratty that he allowed him to do this, although he did tie a rope between the two of them so they wouldn't get separated due to Ratty's enthusiasm and curiousity about their world. Through Red's training and Ratty's determination, Ratty grew to be far larger than most other Rattata, and likewise evolved to become a massive, fearsome Raticate. While it at first took time for Ratty to grow to trust Red, now they are almost inseparable. Ratty is sometimes the only one who understands Red.
Red viewed his supposed rival, Radic, with pity and contempt, never thinking the other boy would be a threat to him. He took every opportunity to shove this in Radic's face, explaining the early animousity between the two. Red enjoyed gloating and bragging about how he always managed to do things better and faster, and the fact that Radic hated him for it amused him.
Red easily defeated the Elite Four, then was immediately challenged by Radic right after he had just been appointed League Champion. Never one to refuse an offer to battle from his rival, Red agreed and he defeated him easily. Despite his public humiliation, Radic refused to stay beaten and kept seeking Red out for rematches. Red got more and more annoyed by him, and yet everytime he saw the devastation and hurt on Radic's face after his Pokémon fell in battle, he couldn't help but feel guilty...
Forced into the storm after a recent battle, Red found himself unwillingly sharing a tent with Radic as shelter. After locating a Tauros, the two fought over the rare Pokémon with disastrous results.
After recovering from the fall off the cliff, the two argued their way back, finding their Pokémon after being robbed by another trainer named Myk. Trying to scale the cliff, Red was distracted by Ratty moving about on his shoulders. Sensing that he was going to fall, he threw Ratty at Radic to spare his Pokémon's life, then slipped.
After landing, Red was taken by the Tauros that Radic caught for him posthumously to a Chansey, who spent all its life energy resurrecting Red from the dead. Red left the dead Chansey and found himself back in a city after a great deal of effort. There he met Violet, an obnoxious fangirl who refused to leave him alone. Roped into traveling with her, he eventually reunited with Radic and was rather surprised to find that Radic was now blind. He, however, was not surprised that Radic had yet to accept this. After a fierce argument, he stormed off, cursing Radic's stubbornness.
After a series of misadventures and disturbing events, the two of them reunited again. Red found that Radic wanted him as support as he cried for his lost Vaporeon. Shocked, Red did not know how to react.
On their way home, Red was woken in the night by Radic, who wanted to know if he could stay with him during the night because of the nightmares he'd been having. Red took pity on Radic, who couldn't see what tormented him, and let him sleep with him. Much to Red's chagrin, Violet found them in such a compromising position and promptly jumped to conclusions.
Radic chased after her. When Red arrived at the scene, he found Radic crying and found Radic again running to him for comfort. He yelled at Violet, who he deduced must have been the cause of his distress.
Finally arriving back at Indigo Plateau, Red found his life as Champion was more stressful then he remembered, leaving him barely any time to protect Radic from Violet's amorous advances. Not to mention that he had to take care of Radic's rogue Pokémon, who had decided to challenge the Elite Four without a Trainer, a faux pas that he never thought anyone would do. It was his responsibility, though, and he took it seriously.
During the battle, Red was attacked by Radic's Alakazam and severely wounded. He was taken back to the infirmary. When he woke, he found Radic waiting for him, relieved to find him okay. He was struck by the fact that Radic seemed to be waiting for Red, not the League Champion.
Red finally learned how Radic felt about their relationship, about how Radic always felt inferior, how bad he felt about everything he'd done and everything he failed to do. Red felt something stir in his heart at the boys plaintive speech and decided there was something he had to do to try and draw Radic out of it. He kissed him, and it worked.
Violet, unable to accept the fact that Radic did not love her, grew to hate Red and accused him of deceiving Radic, manipulating him for his own gain. Not only that, but everyone around him told him that he was going to have to choose what was more important to him, his League Champion status, or Radic...
Red was somewhat relieved when the passageway to Johto was discovered, and he was the first to arrange to travel to the new land and explore. Radic was just as eager to go, and the two of them could sense that there was something new in the air, something that called to them both. Red relinquished his status as League Champion to travel and explore again, not that he was all too concerned about it. After a while he'd begun to feel trapped by the responsibility, and the temptation to explore a new world and new leagues and new battles was too much. After all, he was sure to become the new Champion of whatever region he would go to.
As each new region was discovered, Radic and Red were the first to go and explore. They kept in contact throughout, letting each other know where they were or what Pokémon they had, and while they kept their Pokémon sealed when beginning, they relaxed the restrictions later when a region had nearly been completely explored, thus allowing Red to be with Ratty again.
Red has only grown more confident in his own abilities as time has gone on, although he has grown to show affection to other Pokémon than Ratty. He supports Radic from a distance, battles him when they meet again, and the two of them maintain almost a long-distance relationship when first entering a new land before coming together again. The constant renewal of the basis of everything only makes him all the more dedicated to their relationship, and to the joy of exploring and battling. Red became the League Champion in Johto until he went to Hoenn and defeated the Leader there, then finally on to Sinnoh, where he remains the current League Champion, although he takes the responsibility less seriously than he used to. After all, Red is older and more independent than he used to be, and he prefers to spend more time by himself. The Elite Four of Sinnoh respect his distance, although they do call him constantly on his Pokétch whenever something big comes up.
Red still remains a mostly solitary traveler, usually only with Ratty by his side to keep him company when allowed, but at times, he and Radic do travel together. While they still fight and bicker just as they used to, their bond has become strong and resilient over time, and there's very little that can break it. Where one goes, the other is never very far behind.
Red's Kanto team varies, since Red prefers to train a wide variety of Pokémon according to his needs. The two most consistantly on his team are Ratty the Raticate and RockyBalbo the Golem, although he's also had Fablous the Clefable, Darkseed the Venusaur, Weed the Beedrill, and Nidia the Nidorina. Ratty and RockyBalbo are the two who have come with him to every region without fail, in particular RockyBalbo who is still currently on his Sinnoh team.
Red's team in Johto likewise varied, but he showed a particular fondness for his Steelix, Steely, and Mantine, Manty.
In Hoenn, he did not attach himself very closely to any real Pokémon, with perhaps the exception of his Vigoroth, Slacky. He also raised a Mawile called Mawi.
It's only in Sinnoh that Red has grown very fond of Pokémon other than Ratty. In particular, Red loves his Bronzong, Greco, and his Abomasnow, Globular. He adores these Pokémon, in particular Greco, and has entered them in many contests with lots of success.
Red is fairly average looking with brown hair and hazel eyes, and is mostly notable only for the fact that he and Radic look very much alike. He's very outspoken and opinionated and will not hesitate to make his thoughts known on any topic. While perhaps somewhat vain, Red's confidence in himself or his Pokémon is rarely misplaced. Although he's known to be quite affectionate and loving for certain people, in general Red is somewhat aloof or unconcerned with the welfare of others or their Pokémon. He's not particularly fond of any of Radic's Pokémon, who all likewise return the feeling. He's not known for having a lot of patience, although he won't lose his temper too easily. He just won't tolerate someone annoying him too long without making how he feels known very clearly.
He cares deeply for Ratty and will do anything to protect him, and is somewhat possessive of Radic. Red doesn't like others who try to tell him what to do and dislikes people who feel full of themselves.
Red has been in An Epic Battle, Aftermath, Radic and Red, Continuum, and Nemo Me Impune Lacessit.
He has been mentioned in Veni Vidi Vici, Howl of a Growlithe, Desperate Times, A Puppet Without Strings, and other fics.
