Professor   Denka

I really like how this turned out.Prof. Denka is one of the head researchers at the Pokémon Genetic Research Institute. He oversees many of the projects and his technical expertise is behind many of the more elaborate devices. From doors to locks to restraints, Prof. Denka has been there, as long as it somehow involves electronics.

His white hair is shaggy and unkempt, but he keeps it and his beard very clean. His eyes are a soft gray, often hidden behind a pair of spectacles, and he usually dresses in gray, muted tones. This causes him to blend in often with the gray surroundings of the establishment he works in, which may or may not be intentional. He usually wears a long, gray labcoat and jeans and when he's going casual, which is rare, he usually wears a large gray sweatshirt and sweatpants. Prof. Denka is also fairly overweight, due to his compulsive eating (of mostly high sugar or unhealthy foods) when stressed or frustrated and lack of any real exercise. He is very self-conscious about and aware of his weight and can't stand people staring at him or talking about it. So he usually wears unobtrusive clothing that hides his figure as best as possible.

It is unknown how old Prof. Denka is, as he has never seriously told anyone, but his white hair gives him the impression of being quite old, but he could have just gone prematurely gray. He usually takes things quite seriously, his job in particular.

SweataUnlike Dr. Kagakusha and her fanatical obsession with her job, Prof. Denka knows when to take breaks and when to draw the line. He hates to see things suffer needlessly, but he will inflict pain if it is the only viable option.

Prof. Denka constantly feels guilty because he, unlike Kagakusha due to her unstable mental state and Dr. Dowasure due to his forgetfulness, is aware of just exactly what it is they do in the facility. Most projects come through to him for approval or input, and his skill with electonics is often called upon for restraints.

Prof. Denka is often depressed for various reasons, most work related, and spends a lot of time alone or with his one companion and only Pokémon, a Magneton named Gravital, who helps him test things. A great majority of the facility depends on his abilities and knowledge on an almost daily basis and the people who fund the PGRI are unwilling to assign Prof. Denka a true assistant. As a result, Denka takes on a heavy workload almost every day of situations that vary from mild to extremely life-threatening, with the latter more frequent. As a result, Prof. Denka is under a huge amount of stress at any point almost any day and has very little time to spend with other people or to fritter away with idle pursuits (although, one of Denka's favorite time-wasting games, when he has it to waste, is to throw paperclips for Gravital to catch).

Despite this, he fulfills the obligations of his work steadily and loyally, usually with the aid of coffee, soda, and snacks from a vending machine. He rarely takes sick days, mostly because he feels the entire place would fall apart without him and to a good extent he's correct.

Because of his workload Prof. Denka doesn't eat regular meals, instead constantly snacking, and spends many late nights working or typing at his computer which is linked to almost every part of the facility. Among other things, Prof. Denka can use his computer to access damage and reroute power, something that happens often due to the destructive and violent nature of the beings their facility produces. Angel-Denka

Prof. Denka has been working at the PGRI much longer than Kagakusha and Dowasure and is considered somewhat of an unofficial nurse, although no one would ever say it to his face. He knows a lot about medicine and almost any injury endured in their field of study is usually taken to him for treatment. This is how he originally became familiar with Kagakusha and Dowasure. He remembered Kagakusha because of her peculiar condition and Dowasure out of sheer repetition.

Because of Dowasure's apparent inability to take care of himself, Prof. Denka took it upon himself to become something of a father figure to him, helping him and guiding him when needed. Prof. Denka, whose work was emotionally and mentally draining, found great solace in being able to mentor the forgetful young man. Dowasure, despite Denka's occasional reprimands, simply glew when complimented and spent a great deal of time around Denka, searching for the acceptance that he desperately desired. Prof. Denka more often than not gave it to him, as Dowasure, despite his bad memory, had a brilliant mind. Through his influence, Dowasure became more confident and was able to clarify himself more, and Prof. Denka felt more satisfaction in his job because he had someone he actually enjoyed being around.

However, Namida -- who had grown steadily unstable and psychotic over time -- hated Prof. Denka for being happy while she was unhappy, as she hated all happy people and people in general. She plotted to break both of them apart in the most painful way possible.

Prof. Denka, despite his attempts to keep his temper under control, was short with Dowasure often due to the sheer amount of things that Dowasure could never remember, and the mistakes the young doctor repeated over and over again. Although Kagakusha, in her frustration, had resorted to violence against Dowasure, Prof. Denka refused to do so. The closest he ever got at one point was violence through his words, and this was enough to reduce the young man to tears and send Denka on a huge guilt trip. Kagakusha, observing this, began to pester Denka about Dowasure's inability to cope, his inability to learn. Hi!

It was around this time that Prof. Denka found Teishi and discovered the boy's weak heart. In an effort to help him, Prof. Denka rigged up a primitive kind of pacemaker that helped monitor Teishi's heart and keep it working through an accessory of some kind. Throughout the years this took various forms such as a collar, bracelets, anklets, armlets, and the like.

Prof. Denka also felt a fatherly concern towards Teishi, which, unfortunately, was never given the chance to root such as with Dowasure. Kagakusha quickly took control of Teishi's development, abusing the boy to a horrifying degree. Prof.Denka constantly bandages and tends to Teishi's wounds when Kagakusha is through. Despite Denka's protests, Kagakusha continued with her constant abuse of the child, and Prof. Denka found he could do nothing. Due to the nature of the PGRI projects, no authorities could become involved, and Namida would simply find a way around any restrictions he could set.

Prof. Denka felt extremely guilty about what happened to Teishi, but he was powerless to undo what Kagakusha's conditioning has accomplished. This guilt increased when Teishi was made a servant to those visiting the PGRI, and his abuse seemed to increase tenfold as his "masters", realizing how the boy could not defend himself at all, abused their power. One master in particular ordered Denka to create the shocking mechanism that is present in Teishi's armlet and bracelets today. Denka was vehemently opposed to this, as it could lead to Teishi's death by altering his heart rhythm, but in the end he was also overthrown in this matter as well. Later on, Kagakusha convinced Denka that the only way to cure Dowasure's errant, forgetful behavior was through punishment. Prof. Denka put his foot down in refusing to ever harm Dowasure physically, but Kagakusha then brought up something that he would not tolerate. She stated that if Denka would not punish Dowasure, she would. Knowing of the horrible lengths that Kagakusha could go to, he refused to let Dowasure get hurt by her and therefore had to take on the role of hurting him, to protect him from her.

Prof. Denka lectures Dowasure whenever he forgets something particularly important, and this is painful for them both. Dowasure, being extremely sensitive and emotionally weak, easily collapses into tears underneath pressure. Denka hates having to lecture him and each lecture fills him with more self-loathing. Unaware of how deep Namida's hatred of them was, Prof. Denka convinced himself it was the only and best way, and this rationale enables him to continue with the horrible lectures.

However, despite Kagakusha claiming the contrary, the lectures do nothing for Dowasure except quickly remove any self-confidence he had gained and making him more frightened and skittish than ever, something that Prof. Denka hates. Dowasure began to shy away from him whenever he raised a hand near him, although Denka has never struck him, and the sight saddens him deeply.

Prof. Denka is not happy with his job. Because of the emotional stress of Dowasure combined with the stress of his job in general, he eats more than ever and this doesn't help his self-esteem. He views himself as a failure, in protecting Dowasure and Teishi, in treating Namida and making her well, in making his own decisions about his creations. He views himself as a pawn to be moved about by unfeeling masters and that his opinions do not matter. He is often depressed and more often than not cynical and dislikes people disturbing his work. He views most days and events with critical boredom, although he does show kindness to those in need.

Wrist Scars

The only way that Prof. Denka can make it through some of the more horrific things he has to do is to remove himself emotionally and to become a voice of reason, something he also dislikes doing as he realizes the dangers of doing so with their field of work. However, sometimes it is the only way to do what he has to do, and therefore, he resorts to this tactic often when dealing with specimens or experiments. Sometimes even with Dowasure or Teishi.

His work with electronics has left many burn marks on his fingers and his hands shake slightly when they aren't working on something. The tops of his wrists have a series of small, random scars, which were caused by one of Namida hysterical fits of madness.

Unable (or unwilling, since it is a fairly secure position) to find another job and unsure of where he would fit in anyway, Prof. Denka plods through day after day, hoping that someday he'll find the strength to do what he knows is right, but going home everyday to find that nothing has changed. He hates the cruel things that he has to do, and he hates the fact that he will, most likely, continue doing them. He lives alone, excepting for Gravital and a few other pets that he often talks to when lonely, fully aware they won't respond. He dislikes religion or religious people, believing there is no kind of god that would allow the things that happened to Teishi to happen. He hates fate and his circumstances, and has lost all faith in other powers other than himself, which is also slowly following suit.

Prof. Denka can be kindly if approached correctly, but more often than not his answers will be blunt, sarcastic, or even cruel. He intensely dislikes people telling him what to do with his job, and also dislikes people who believe that they know and can do everything. He's not someone to be trifled with, as he does have some power, despite his beliefs to the contrary, but most of the time he quietly waits for something in his life to give him meaning. He's not someone to be handled lightly.

Prof. Denka has been in Koinonayami, A Poofmas Carol, The Rocky Horror Pokémon Genetics Research Institute, 'S A $%^#in' Strange World Out There, Nightmare, Hikaru no Ashita, Taiken, Obediance, and Desperate Times.

Prof. Denka has been mentioned in Volatile, Kenshin, Devotion, and other fics.
